You know… I have so many plants and I love them all, even the ones that don’t bloom, but:
Honeysuckle for its aroma and happy childhood memories of trying to suck out the nectar. Every once in a while I still do that. It tasted sweeter when I was a child….
Rose for its classic beauty.

Night-blooming cereus for its transient beauty (I raise these and I’ve had a single bloom pop up two years in a row. I haven’t been able to catch it in full bloom yet! It doesn’t follow the lunar cycle quite as expected….)
It’s apparently a rule to only use last names when addressing each other. The only rule-breakers I’ve noticed are:
Vincent saying Diedrich instead of his last name, which seems to be Weizsäcker
Edgar Redmond calling Bluer “Lawrence”
Soma constantly referring to our earl as “Ciel” instead of Phantomhive
Because of this rule, there are some first names we don’t even know, like Clayton’s, Cheslock’s, and McMillan’s (though we later find out his first initial is “N” because of the letter he sent… but was never read).
Maybe… that he might not be German at all, but that he was purchased by the German military (for that drug research facility) in much the same way that people were purchased by Karnstein Hospital for the Aurora Society’s experiments. Lau said that human trafficking at the London docks (particularly in East End) had recently picked up the pace… not that it had all-of-a-sudden started. That would explain why, when the others ask him whether he can speak and understand German, he says that he knows a little bit. If he had been German:
He should know way more of his native language than that.
Why would he know how to speak English so well and with an apparently British accent? The only dialogue we see from the staff of the facility is in German.
Sebastian and our earl wouldn’t be surprised by his ability to speak any German at all.
I think he could fit the name Finnian better than intended by our earl; Finny really could be Irish or at least of Irish descent.
I know this is just part of an unpopular opinion meme and I’m just sitting here proving your point buuuut you have some valid questions and I can’t pass up an opportunity to over-analyse so if you’re interested here’s some answers:
There’s evidence to suggest that when they were in the facility the subjects had little verbal communication with the professors at all, and therefore wouldn’t have ever learnt German properly even if it was their native language. In chapter 92 we see the subjects in the research facility and they only communicate in disjointed responses. Yeah, the two pages don’t show the whole 13 years of experimentation, but the dialogue is deliberately stilted enough to imply that they didn’t have the opportunity to form large vocabularies.
Assuming that fact one is correct, Finny’s German vocabulary likely wasn’t large enough to have too much of an impact on his English one. It’s like how people rarely have accents when they learn a language from a young age. Same principle. Furthermore Sebastian taught him English (there’s a panel in chapter 44 that shows this) – and I doubt he would ever consider his job done properly if he didn’t rigorously instruct him in proper English elocution. However, we do have evidence that Finny didn’t speak English before coming to England, again in chapter 92:
(Granted there is a conversation held after this in English, but judging from the hair growth it seems quite a bit of time had already passed + Finny doesn’t say much there either.)
Finally, Sebastian and o!Ciel weren’t surprised by Finny’s ability to speak German. Snake was.

You make good points. I was going to mention in my original reply that it’s possible he had very little vocabulary in any language, particularly since we have no idea how young he was when the project began… or whenever he was brought in to become a subject. I took it all back out just before posting and was about to add all that back in to my reply but then I saw there was already a reblog that addresses it.
I forgot that our earl and Sebastian didn’t really react to his use of German. Finny was the first of the new servants to join the household, right? Maybe he picked up enough English by the time Bard and Mey-Rin joined that they didn’t really suspect English wasn’t his first language.
I do recall how little vocabulary the subjects used with each other and the researchers, it’s just that there is more than one reason why the subjects might speak so little German among themselves: they could be from different countries, and this smattering of German they’ve picked up is the only bit of shared language they have.
I also recall the panel of Finny’s flashback to when he didn’t “understand” what our earl was saying to him, but I thought he meant he didn’t understand some underlying meaning, not that he didn’t even understand the words themselves. You could be right that it really was a language barrier and not a “levels of meaning” issue.
I wanted to also add to my original reply one other point: if he were German, the German military wouldn’t experiment on their own like that… but then a vision of Sieglinde hove into view. She was the daughter of German chemists and became the sole subject of a massive military research project. Her own mother had her feet bound and fed her constant lies about… pretty much everything. Some people will literally give up their own children to their terrible causes. Who knows? Perhaps he was practically born into the project…. Our earl says children are not the tools of their parents, but the manga shows us so many instances in which children are treated as exactly that.
Ok, so I was going to post about how I used to promote the idea of Finny being German because it makes him and Sieglinde the perfect parallels to Hjúki and Bil from Norse Mythology. They are a German boy and girl kidnapped by Máni, the moon, and they become loyal to him. Máni is chased by Hati, while his sister, Sól (sun), is chased by Sköll… two sons of Fenrir. So, Sebastian can be seen as Hati or both of the wolves.
But tumblr ate my reblog when I tried to post it. Then I saw a comment about this thread in the notes. @dreamilydelicatesublime just made me think of something that caught my eye earlier today when I was looking through the green witch arc for something else (that I haven’t found yet). I already posted about the slight error regarding the rewording of the queen’s letter.
The other thing that got my attention was the scene where the facility is destroying its research and its subjects, the “prototypes”. The researcher who shoots the other two kids but pauses on “S-012” (giving the kid enough time to climb up and kill the researchers instead and escape to the surface) says something that really made my gears turn. And now I’m pretty sure Finny is German. In fact, I’m almost certain he’s the son of the researcher that couldn’t bring himself to kill “S-012”.
And here’s why. It’s translated into English in the licensed translation as “fruits of my labor”, with fruits in bold. Why? Because that’s also a term used to describe one’s offspring… the “fruits of my loins” is a common phrase used to refer to your own kids; it’s even used in the King James Bible with this meaning.
So, ok. I’m back on board with him being German. 100%.
Now, my most unpopular opinions or ideas about Finny are that he’s a parallel to Hjúki from Norse Mythology… and that he’s the son of the researcher who was sent to kill him.
Sheesh… and my previously posted reblog of this even mentioned how parents in the series are all about using their children as tools. Looks like I just found another instance of it. I wonder now whether all their “prototypes” came from researchers on the project or military personnel….

Sheesh, if this turns out to be true, then we learn in that arc about two German children who were used as experiments or test subjects (of a sort) for weapons research. And their similar backgrounds (to each other) make them even better parallels to Hjúki and Bil, too.
Oh… how did I forget to mention that in Mother3 theory (which overlaps all three installments of the game series), Finny is the best parallel to Ness from Mother2.

Thanks for the additional info. LOL… I was about to look up the Japanese flower symbolism, since Yana-san once said (tweet, I think) that she typically goes by that.
She might be using white poppies as the intended flower. The frame and flowers look to be the same shade of blue, so they might actually be a white frame and white poppies. However, in Japanese folklore, twins are sometimes depicted as people who were lovers in a past life. Another reason why I think Lord Vega is twins.
1. I doubt anyone was left alive from that facility besides Finny, but I guess we cannot be sure.
2. Since he might be the only survivor from that research facility, it’s unlikely anyone would know to look for him. I guess the only way we would get a definitive answer to #1 or #2 is if someone shows up looking for him and mentions he was not the only survivor….
3. He’s interacted with Sieglinde and Diedrich some, at least during the green witch arc. It wouldn’t surprise me if he’s dealt with Diedrich before, since Diedrich has been to the manor… at least once since our earl became earl (ch3). Finny is a nice kid and innocent to the core, so Sieglinde might say things that really confuse him 😂, and either of them would be amazed by his strength. If Diedrich ever saw his strength, his first comment would probably be about our earl’s (and Vincent’s) propensity for odd servants or associates. I’d be interested to see how Sieglinde or Diedrich would act if they found out how he got that strength. Diedrich might be mostly shocked. Sieglinde might see Finny as someone with a past similar to hers — being used by the military to develop chemicals, just in different ways. Particularly if it’s true that his father is the researcher who failed to shoot him… though I doubt Finny has any idea about that himself. 😢 Maybe it’s best he never knows. It tore Sieglinde up to find out her own mother essentially donated her to scientific experimentation.
There’s a chance that Diedrich (von) Weizsäcker was partly named after Carl Friedrich von Weizsäcker, a famous German nuclear physicist and philosopher who worked during WWII. It’s unclear whether Carl worked on their atomic bomb research project, but it’s very possible.
Either that, or maybe he’s meant to be one of Carl’s recent ancestors, since Carl wasn’t born until 1912….
